Title - Pivot Points: Creating a Culture of Preparedness & Resiliency in America
Those who seriously prepare in advance for (any type) of disaster have been granted many nicknames from Society. This book mainly covers the ones labeled as the Preppers or Survivalists. The signs of possible crisis are all around us. Few people are so sheltered that they have not seen them. However, human nature lets people believe that nothing so dire could ever actually happen to them. Mr. Martin’s book is an attempt to educate American readers as to why it is wise to be prepared. It does not matter if you believe that zombies will walk the land someday or in the possibility of civil unrest. It could be the fear of pandemics, economic crisis, or any other dozen types of unwanted problems. The author urges people to prepare for any and all problems that they believe could happen in their lifetime.
In the Introduction, the author clearly admits that most of the things in this book are not new. We have simply forgotten them over time. He also tells you up front that he will talk about God, guns, citizenship, charity, politics and will be critical of certain government actions and policies. As I read on, I found myself disagreeing with one or two things; however, I was warned in advance that the author did not expect me (or you) to agree with everything. In fact, I grinned whenever I remembered the warning. I prefer someone to be up front and honest with me – and for that someone to realize/respect that I will not bow down and simply agree with everything he says.
The deeper I delved into this book, the more often I would recall little words of wisdom from my mother. One was “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Another was “Think ahead. Try to be prepared, because it is better to be safe than sorry.” I have always thought that our Elders were encyclopedias of knowledge. This includes anyone older than you. Of example, I am the baby (and only girl) of my family. I grew up with two older brothers. By watching my elder siblings make mistakes and get punished by our parents, I learned NOT to repeat their mistakes. Therefore, my parents told everyone that I was easy to raise or that I seldom got into trouble. I was prepared and avoided disaster.
For myself, I found the most interesting sections of this book involved:
1. A Time Magazine article entitled “Why We Don’t Prepare.”
2. CPR
3. What is a “Culture of Preparedness?”
4. The top ten causes of death in America
5. At what point do someone’s disaster preparedness efforts become a symptom of a mental illness?
***** FOUR & A HALF STARS! It all boils down to the fact that it is not the government’s job or the church’s job to take care of you. You are ultimately responsible for your own safety, well-being and happiness. This book can help you begin. ***** (I borrowed this book from Amazon’s Kindle lending library.)

Title - Toxicity
The setting is around the year 2130. As the story opens, the past is narrated in the form of a letter from a man to his grandson. Drinking water is the most precious commodity. Most of “Amreeka” is a dry wasteland. The population is very low and is now ruled by the Islamic. There is a religious struggle between the Christians and Muslims rage. Those who do not agree to convert to Muslim are executed in front of their families. Many “Lowlanders” are enslaved. The nation is controlled by hyper-paranoia unseen since the days of Hitler.
Seven young Mississippi males sneak out of the Lowlands, which holds a death penalty. Their destination is the famed palace, Al-qasr Quraysh, in Detroit. This is where the television showed their loved ones being auctioned off. They plan to rescue the women or die trying. To do so, they must dodge the ISA (Islamic State Authority), the SMA (Southern Muslim Alliance), and rogue bounty hunters. During their journey they come across a handful of allies, such as a survivalist group who is currently undergoing their own mission.
Abdul-Bali is the son of Abdul-Muttalib Bashir. (Ruler in Detroit.) After witnessing horrible abuse and cold-blooded murders of servants and slaves by his cruel brother – and receiving no real help or answers from his parents – Bali sneaks out of the palace to discover for himself why non-Muslims were scorned so badly.
***** FOUR & A HALF STARS! Let me state up front that this story is NOT anti-Christian or anti-Muslim. This story tells what could happen in America’s future. It tells of the oppressed who bravely battle against tyranny and how they plan to change their current world for something better. This is not what I call “light reading”; instead, there are ups, downs, and a lot of strategic planning. This novel will probably be an eye opener for many.
The writing styles of the authors fluctuates a bit, but never distracts from the intensity of the story. The book is longer than most, over five hundred pages, and is told by a variety of characters. This means that there is some scene hopping, but (again) it never distracts from the tale. In anything, it adds more depth as readers are able to witness different sides of events. The authors give the novel a realistic ending too. All of the troubles do not end and all loose strings are not tied into pretty little bows; however, the story stops in a good place. The main message (that I took away from this story) is that change is coming and, unless we are careful today, tomorrow may not be so free. *****
Author: Doc Lucky Meisenheimer (Dr. John Meisenheimer)
Title - The Immune
Set in the near future. Dr. John Long's future seems secure. He is living the American dream. He has a successful internal medicine practice in Orlando, Florida. He is well known in the area, like by his office and ER staff, has a good place to call home, and has just claimed Cassandra Shelly by the slipping of an engagement ring onto her finger. But then everything changes. The world is suddenly in a biological crisis of a singular nature. Genetically manufactured creatures, named airwars, are attacking at random. They resemble massive Man O'Wars, often larger than a football field. Each airwar has colonies of hanging tentacles and each tentacle contains multiple poisonous nematocysts that paralyze anything brushing against them. (Much like a jellyfish.) An airwar can use its tentacles to enter homes and pull out any humans dwelling within. Bullets will kill an airwar, but causes thousands of juvenile airwars to be released into the sky. (Kill one and thousands are made.)
The United nations formed an emergency council to disseminate world policy to all governments. The Airwar Scientific Council "ASC" is almost immediately created. (Later renamed Airwar Security Council.) The ASC is run by a bunch of scientists, politicians, and military. In a very brief amount of time, all world governments cede ASC absolute authority regarding laws on airwars, and by extension, those laws affect all facets of peoples' lives. The ASC must approve all mention of airwars in the media and take control of everything but the Internet. Violaters are deemed to be terrorists. Anyone voicing complaints are deemed to be "whiners". Both are dealt with harshly. Global gun confiscation begins. If an airwar wraps its tentacle around someone, even if it is your child, you are not allowed to attack it. The human is to be sacrificed so thousands more airwars are not created.
Of course, not everyone hands over their weapons. Militia groups spring up throughout the globe. With every airwar they kill, thousands more are made.
John's life comes to a halt when airwars attack Cassandra's area. And it shatters when John views his fiancé's body in the morgue. Consumed with grief and the burning desire for revenge, John ends up confronting, and surprisingly defeating, an airwar without any juveniles being released. The event is caught on camera, earning him lots of fame for being one of the rare individuals who are immune to the airwars' stings. It also earns him a one-way trip to one of the government's processing plants, where "Immunes" are tortured and skinned alive in order to extract proteins from their glands. John is lucky. Just before he is to unwillingly shed his skin, John, and all surviving Immunes, are pardoned.
Navy Admiral J.P. Beckwourth, with ASC approval, is forming the World Immune Corps. He wants John, as the one who discovered how to kill an airwar without juveniles being released, to lead the first group. The team is called First Immune Attack Force. John teaches and leads ten immune people to protect humanity. There is no feasible way they can actually save the human race, but the ASC claims that their scientists have found a way. But the ASC needs time to finish whatever they are working on.
The press has given John the sobriquet "The Immune". As a talented public relations guy, Beckwourth plans to use this to the team's advantage. Beckwourth convinces The Immune and his team that the world needs heros, to see something actually being done against the airwars threat. Once humanity has hope, riots and militia attacks would cease and stability could be maintained. It would also fulfill John's urge to kill the creatures that had taken Cassandra from him. But exactly what is the ASC working on and why is the knowledge being kept from the public? As John slowly begins to figure out how the ASC intends to end the crisis, he realizes the true meaning of fear.
***** FIVE STARS! Winston Churchill is quoted as having said, "In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies." In this story, those bodyguards are referred to as "FS Maneuvers". Fortitude South was the greatest covert disinformation operation of World War II. It allowed the Allies to pull off D-Day. Simply put, deceptions/lies are used to distract people from noticing an underlying agenda. The author, Meisenheimer, seems to thoroughly understand the maneuver. It shows up often in his story.
Long ago someone told me that in order to pen a realistic story you must write about something you know. Dr. Meisenheimer has done this in spades. Want some examples? The main character and the author both have medical backgrounds, their practices are in the same area, they are avid swimmers, and they even share the name of John. (Those are off the top of my head.) But unlike the main character, Doc Lucky's background is riddled with a wide variety of interests and they commingle to help develop the rest of the story.
"The Immune" takes a biological crisis and expands the problem to include military strategy, survivalism, political science, corruption in the government, human psychology, and, since the airwar is a genetically manufactured creature, experimental mutations. Though this is categorized as science fiction, who can honestly state that such a destructive creature will not someday be produced, if it has not already?
This story did not fully hook my interest until the second chapter; however, subtle symptoms of the airwar threat appear by the second page. As you read, take nothing for granted. The main and secondary characters are well developed. The story line flows smoothly, with little or no choppiness. The plot and strategies are explained in laymen terms. My only real concern with this book is the front cover. With apologizes to the artist, the cover art is not eye catching. I am sure that the artwork looks great on paper or canvas, but as a front cover it comes across (to me) as too busy and the two people are not well drawn. Though everyone knows that a book should never be judged by its cover, the fact is that most buyers are drawn to a book because of an eye catching, attractive cover. I have no doubt that many will pass over this gem, but for those who read this review, I sincerely recommend purchasing "The Immune". It is a story that will engage your imagination and, more than likely, give many a few major concerns about today's government. Doc Lucky Meisenheimer is a multi-talented individual and I look forward to reading more of his stories in the future. *****
Peterson Field Guides
One of the first questions I am asked, or I ask myself when discussing foraging for plants, is how do you know what's safe? The answer to these and other questions on edible wild plants is contained in Lee Allen peterson's Edible Wild Plants. This si the first book you generally hear mentioned when edible plants are discussed.
This book is very well written. it contains over 400 drawings and 78 color photos, to help in the identification of the mentioned plants. Each entry contains information on habitat, when they flower, a description and the uses. Also conatins any applicable warnings. The line drawings are very accurate and are more than enough, when coupled with the descriptions, to be able to identify just about any plant. But if you have any doubts, check the color photos. Also, at the back of the book, it contains the various types of plants divided up into habitat, and then each habitat divided into what plants can be harvested there during various seasons. This book is a great resource for any survivalist's bookshelf.
The second book i am going to look at from Peterson's line of field guides is Eastern/Central Medicinal Plants. As most survivalists know, you are generally not going to be able to store everything you might need for various medical problems. yet there is a whole pharmacy growing by the side of the road you drive along every day. This book helps you find what you need, and tells how it's used. I would suggest coupling this book with another such as A Modern Herbal, by Mrs. M. Grieve, FRHS or a similar book. And as always, be very careful when using herbal remedies, as
even in medicinal plants, there are often side effects, or parts of the plants that are detrimental to your health.

Title - Razor Girl (Fiction)
When Molly was fifteen-years-old, people thought her dad, Ian Anderson, was a mad scientist. Ian was a scientist, but just because the man totally believed that the end of the world, as we know it, was about to happen did not mean he was insane. Ian bought an old fallout shelter, packed it with food and supplies, and gave it a timer so it would unlock after six years. Convinced the end was close, he made Molly come home directly after school and practice martial arts with him for several hours.
When a super flu begins spreading, no one really gives it any serious thoughts. But when rumors begin about hospitals turning people away, no matter how sick they were, Molly and Chris Griffin (a neighborhood and school friend) listens. The pair go to a local hospital to see if rumors are true. Not only do the two learn that it is true, but they see their first zombie! Of course, they tell no one. Who would believe the daughter of an insane scientist? But after Molly sees a zombie kill someone, she agrees to her dad's numerous suggestions of allowing him to perform surgery to give her a few enhancements for defense. It is very shortly thereafter that Ian escorts Molly and her mom into the shelter beneath their home and locks them within for six years.
Twenty-one-year-old Molly emerges from the fallout shelter a different person. After hearing the shelter unlock, Molly's mom dies. Once her mom is cared for, Molly begins her journey to Florida (two states away) where she is to meet her dad at Disney World. According to Ian, while Molly was in the shelter, he and some scientist friends of his would be creating a safe haven for any humans that manage to survive the apocalypse. Molly has no doubt she can make the trip alive. Thanks to her dad, Molly has four inch razors under her nails (that she can extract and retract at will). She also has ocular implants (to see in the dark), mirrored plates covering her eyes (fused to her skull), an internal GPS navigation (linked to an old-time satellite to allow her access to special databases Ian left up and running), and her body has nano computers (which make her stronger and faster).
It does not take Molly long to come face-to-face with her first zombie. She also meets up with Chris. He is now called Chase and explains that the "Others" may be cannibalistic zombies, but unlike the old horror movies, the Others are smart and often hunt in packs. Chase and a few guys have a small camp set up in the toy section of Walmart. They take care of eight kids found since the apocalypse. Disaster strikes, leaving Chase and the kids alone. Molly, Chase, and the kids must band together and struggle toward Disney World in hopes of finding safety.
***** This book will appeal to a large audience, especially for those gamers out there who played "Fallout". This book runs much like two stories. One chapter shows before the apocalypse, the next shows afterward, and it continues to alternate. Normally I detest this type of set up; however, the author did a terrific job and this method actually works extremely well. Molly and Chase are easy to identify with, no matter your age. (Anyone teen and up anyway.) There is a romance which blooms between the two main characters, but the story remains focused on the plot at all times. As with all good books, this opens with danger and will grab your interest immediately. Stellar! *****

Title - Bodies We've Buried (CSI Training School)
This gem gives readers a look inside the National Forensic Science Institute. This is where students are trained in burial recovery with actual human/animal remains. These are the things that are normally off-limits to anyone outside of law enforcements, medical fields, scientists, and the like.
***** Within these pages are detailed studies, complete with photos, on blood spatters, arson, organic decomposition, photo evidence, DNA, and so much more. It was written by two instructors, so all the information is dead on (no pun intended) and quite unnerving at times. I found this book to be so intense that I could have almost used it as a textbook. With the photos to show me exactly what was being explained (in text) to me, I could easily see everything being played out in my mind's eye.
This is all VERY realistic and hard-hitting even though I was never (physically) at any real crime scene. One thing is for sure, I will never look at the world in the same way again. This book is going onto my Keeper Shelf and, I have no doubts, I will be referring back to it during many TV or movie scenes. (Why? To see if the evidence and the recovery of all the evidence, were really researched or simply thrown together in hope that no one above the intelligence of a slug would check behind the makers.) Highly recommended as a beginners reference or simply for those who want to know the truth. *****

Title - Dead Air
Dr. Hallie Mara is a molecular geneticist. Reed Kincaid works in advertizing. They are together and watch in horror as Kyle, Reed's brother, dies from an unexplained and sudden cardiac arrest "SCD". But before he dies, Kyle informs them that he has been poisoned and that "many will die Friday." A thorough autopsy is done with all types of poisons tested for. The results claim that there was no poison. Therefore, no police investigation. Hallie and Reed begin their own investigation. Once they have evidence and present it, the police and federal authorities take charge, but it is too late.
It becomes clear that they must stop a brilliant, driven psychopath who is poised to exterminate sixty thousand innocent people in ten unidentified US cities on Friday. Yet no one knows what type of poison will be used, where it will be used, or how it will be distributed.
***** Here is fair warning for all readers with tender hearts. The killer within this novel tortures animals. He also kills animals and children. If you cannot handle such a realistic madman, avoid this book. If you decide to read anyway, do not bother complaining to the author or this reviewer. You were warned.
As the two main characters investigate and learn about the poison, the reader is shown the horrible potential of biochemical weapons. The author, Mike Brogan, shows what COULD someday happen with this devastating work of fiction. As the reader, I had to keep reminding myself that this was fiction. The author made it all so realistic that my mind refused to look at some of what was happening in the story. It kept shying away. I had to force myself to return and reread pages. By doing so, I overlooked nothing. The author's lesson hit home and that lesson is terrifying! Highly recommended reading. *****

Title - Pandemic
Right now, in a remote corner of rural China, a farmer and his family are sharing their water supply with their livestock: chickens, ducks, pigs, sheep. They share the same waste-disposal system, too.
Bird viruses meet their human counterparts in the bloodstreams of the swine, where they mix and mutate before spreading back into the human population. And a new flu is born....
Dr. Noah Haldane, of the World Health Organization, knows that humanity is overdue for a new killer flu, like the great influenza pandemic of 1919 that killed more than twenty million people in less than four months. So when a mysterious new strain of flu is reported in the Gansu Province of mainland China, WHO immediately sends a team to investigate.
Haldane and his colleagues soon discover that the new disease, dubbed Acute Respiratory Collapse Syndrome, is far more deadly than SARS, killing one in four victims, regardless of their age or health. But even as WHO struggles to contain the outbreak, ARCS is already spreading to Hong Kong, London, and even America.
In an age when every single person in the world is connected by three commercial flights or fewer, a killer bug can travel much faster than the flu of 1919. Especially when someone is spreading the virus on purpose.

Title - Virus X
This author gives a lot of information about how doctors with NOTHING,
battling plagues in the wilds of Africa, are forced to improvise equipment.
He discusses what to look for in different diseases in Autopsies,
safeguards, etc... He talks about docs performing autopsies outside on the
ground, in the dirt, in the rain.
He discusses little known facts about projects USAMRIID has been
working on (Counters to weaponized Ebola that the Russians have) and other
little known facts like that the Ebola outbreak in Reston VA was Spread
by Aerosol! It just happened not to be a strain that was easy to catch
by humans (Even though lab workers ALL suddenly showed antibodies to
Ebola in their blood, and several got "flu like symptoms" from it). I Was
always lead to believe that the workers "Coincidently got the flu"..
not true, they had a mild case of Ebola!
He talks about 1st world close calls, like the little girl returning to
Britain on a mail plane with a doctor that was sick from Ebola (The Doc
died).. even though she was in close physical contact with him,
miraculously, she didn't catch it.. There have been SEVERAL of these close
calls in several countries, the USA included.
He also discusses how diseases suddenly "pop up out of no where" as
Asians and Africans move into more remote regions. They STILL do not know
what animal host carries Ebola. Ebola is a HIGHLY mutable disease,
which is why the Russians grabbed it for Bio-weapons... He predicts we'll
see it many more times in the future.
For some reason, Americans think that "maybe a few hundred people have
died from Ebola".. this is not true.. there have been several outbreaks
in Africa, killing MANY THOUSANDS and forcing troops to quarentine
whole cities.
***** Excellent book. A little dated now (Copyright 1997) but the info is
solid. What makes it more believable it that the Trends he forecast in
1997 have come true.. like Species jumping viruses, Human/Bird viruses.
It's VERY easy to read. He gets technical, but he explains what the
technical stuff means in such a way in the stories that before you realize
it, you are reading the technical info with full comprehension without
realizing that you learned it... Kinda makes you proud of yourself ;)
What's more, you begin to anticipate what the Doctors in the stories
should do... "Hey, he needs to run an ELIZA test from a Capture Assay!
What idiot still uses a primitive fluorescent label? Look for the fixed
antibody enzyme and then compare the color change bud!" *****

Title - Detachment X-Ray
(Survival/Military Thriller)
Jake Green was a US Navy Seaman. He was caught up in a battle front
advance in the Korean War. Even though he had never trained for
battlefield duties, the Marines assigned him as a radioman and gunfire
spotter with a forward echelon unit led by Captain John "Silvertip"
Silvers. The unit became surrounded and held out for five days with
heavy battle situations. There were only a few survivors.
When
Green returned to his ship he was told that the situation he had been
in
had never occurred. Green, and a select few others he had never met
before, were sent back to the United States for "special training" and
Detachment X-Ray was formed. This secret organization had a chain of
command that reached back to the White House. The members never knew
where they their mission would be until they got there, nor what their
mission would entail.
Only the mission was important!
Trust no one!
***** W-O-W! I cannot express how wonderful this book is! You
have to read it to believe it. The author managed to show how awful
war could be, as well as, how far a person would go when pushed beyond
their limits. The author injected military humor even during the
survival training sections. Highly recommended reading! *****
Author: Jess Parker
Title - Covert Avengers
(Sequel to Detachment X-Ray)
In the previous book (Detachment X-Ray) Jake Green "Navy" had told
Major Long Ball Kwong that the next time they met Jake would gut him.
Surprise, surprise, when Long Ball appeared with a trade delegation from the
People's Republic of China as Mr. Dong Ping (future
Premier).
Jake had been in deep cover, ordered after he left Detachment X-Ray. He
emerged and became Staff Assistant to a United States Senator, Sam
Martin. Jake had been at a U.N. conference when he spied Long Ball. Jake was
lucky enough to get the best secretary on the Hill and her big
boyfriend was a small arms expert. Better yet, Jake struck gold when he hired a
red haired Irish lass as his driver. She was THE BEST when tails from
the FBI, CIA, and the Chinese Secret Service had to be shook
off!
Jake, his new staff, and comrades from the Korean War got together to
deal with a mountain feud, stop a drug running operation (via sea), and
make plans for Long Ball.
***** Very few sequels to books and
movies are as good as the original. Yet Jess Parker has succeeded in doing
it here. It was fast paced and non-stop all the way through the novel
with a climatic ending that left me laughing and begging for more! I can
only hope the author is considering a third for Jake Green. I am so
happy to be able to highly recommend this book, and its author, to
everyone I meet! *****
Authors: Leon Cooper & Don Tait
Title - 90 Day Wonder: Darkness Remembered
(World History/Memoir)
Co-author Leon Cooper recounts his experiences as a U.S. Naval officer
during World War II. The story goes backwards and forwards in time, but
mainly begins around the time Pearl Harbor was bombed. The reader
glimpses several key people in Cooper's life, such as Lt. Commander Douglas
Fairbanks, Jr. Then there is Captain Boda of the Harry Lee who
took an instant dislike of Cooper and began to make life very
difficult. In fact, Boda is to Cooper what Vader is to Luke, a dark and
maleficent force that needed to be reckoned with.
Then there is the
return to civilian life. With all he has witnessed, Cooper and Alberta
(the love of his life) must somehow cope with not only the events during
Cooper's military time, but also events from his childhood.
***** If you enjoy reading about history, biographies, or just the events
around the WW II era, then I strongly recommend this novel!
Authors Leon Cooper and Don Tait have done an excellent job in
blending Cooper's military time, home life, and even his childhood days into
a riveting story for readers. An outstanding piece of work!

Author: Vladislav Tamarov
Title - Afghanistan: A Russian Soldier's Story
(World History/Memoir)
Here is a riveting memoir by Vladislav Tamarov. In 1984 men were
drafted into the Soviet Army at the age of eighteen. There was no choice.
Unless you were in college or disabled, you served. Many men broke their
legs to avoid serving. Others, the more wealthy, bribed their way out.
Vlad was in college two years when the law changed and he was off to
boot camp. Training the men needed, they never received. Training the men
did NOT need, they got. (For example, lots of time was spent learning
to parachute, even though it was a well known fact that no one used
parachutes in Afghanistan.)
Vlad was born January 12, 1965. His "Date of Military Service
Application" was April 26, 1984. This memoir really began when an officer walked
up to Vlad at a distribution center and asked, "Do you want to serve in
the commandos, the Blue Berets?" Vlad kept a tiny calendar where he
crossed off his six hundred and twenty-one days, one-at-a-time. Vlad kept
detailed records of each mission he participated in. He had his own
little code, shown in this memoir. Two hundred and seventeen of those days
were spent on combat missions. In addition to Vlad's coded diary, he
secretly took many photographs. This book has dozens of the pictures
littered throughout, and makes a powerful impact on those who read it.
***** Vlad, a minesweeper, portrays the horrors of war in vivid
details. The reader can almost hear the explosions nearby and smell the fear
of being shot at. Once you have read THIS book, you will never forget
it! *****

Title - Bubbas Of The Apocalypse
(Very warped & humorous anthology)
In the year 2025, a deadly air born virus known as Yuppie 25
escaped from a secret government lab. It was believed to have been on a
scrap of toilet paper stuck to the bottom of a scientist's shoe as he
left work. Yuppie 25 spread around the world at lightning speed. Riots
broke out as all the leaders in the world died out. No country had
leadership or laws any longer. The Yuppie madness sent people into
rages, murder went unchecked.
One scientist noticed that certain
people of a certain class and life style seemed to be completely immune
to the bug. Tests showed that they had an unusual enzyme in their blood
that was traced to a cheap preservative used in generic barbecue sauce
which apparently mutated when it was grilled. The people who had
consumed large amounts of the barbecue sauce on grilled meats over
their
life times had built up a natural immunity to Yuppie 25. Within a few
months most of the population of the earth was dead. Only Bubbas and
their families survived untouched. All others were zombies.
Bubbas had become the last hope for humanity!

He intended to take the plague within himself, along with the two other canisters containing the SV Strain, to New York City. He would have revenge on a small group of people there, killing millions in the biggest holocaust of all time!
***** W-O-W! I am having trouble shaking this one off! I keep telling myself that this is a work of fiction. The scary thing is, the chances are high that something similar to the SV Strain is already out there and only an elite group working on it know!
A well written story with a strong plot. There was bad editing in my copy, but it may be a "review copy", I can't tell. The story is fast paced and held my attention from the first page until the climactic ending. Highly recommended! *****

Jim Grover: title -Street Smarts, Firearms, Personal Security
Some names stand out among the others in different areas of expertise... In the personal security and shooting worlds, "Jim Grover" is one such name! One can always find Mr. Grover's name in such popular places as his column in Guns and Ammo or Handguns magazines. Mr. Grover specializes in teaching you how to stay alive and avoid crime in the "real world". He's so successful because his techniques WORK.
In today's computer driven world, anyone can write a book, and even make it look good. Anyone can rehash older techniques and try to convince the reader that a small twist in an old idea can make it the "ultimate" fighting style. Lord save us from these people, cause we surely won't be able to save ourselves on the mean streets after reading that tripe. That's why it's important to note that Jim Grover's styles are PROVEN to work! To those of us "in the know" it's easy to tell that Jim knows his business and every detail associated with it!
Hard hitting, no nonsense, straight facts make this book an excellent and dependable read. He deals with not only Home and street security and topics, but also for travel abroad. I was impresed that Jim covers child protection in detail, that's an important "peace of mind" for those of us who are Parents struggling to keep our kids safe in a world that sometimes seems insane! You can look, but you won't find a better book on the subject of Personal Security!

Mike Robinson: title -Fighting Skills of the SAS
Talk about getting a "two for one" deal! When I saw this book I was expecting to have to sift through some boring, rehashed history of the SAS, I was pleasantly surprised! Not only is this excellent book a well written and easy to read Narrative of the SAS, it's a complete Survival and "How To" Book also! Author Mike Robinson is well known for his many other books on Special Operational Forces around the world.
Each topic is covered in detail, how to pull off cold weather operations, small unit tactics, desert work, rappelling, general survival, basic medical, chemical operations, Signals, radio work, weapons, staying hidden, booby traps, handling guerrilla troops, and much much more!!!! I stayed up all night reading this book and couldn't put it down!
The exotic pictures really set the book off well and each diagram of tactics is well presented. The information is top notch, not the usual "I was with em and killed a hundred people" type thing at all. You REALLY get your money's worth from this book! You'll be impressed (and educated!)

Val Shilin & Charlie Cutshaw: title - Legends and Reality of the AK
Everyone knows of my love for the AK-47 style family of weapons, I thought I knew every one ever made in detail and all of the spin offs... I wasn't even close!
This BIG book is THE most definitive work of EVERY style of AK ever created. Nothing is left out. Val Shilin was a close associate of Mikhail Kalashnikov at the Izhmash Arms Factory, And Charlie Cuttshaw is a noted small arms expert. Together they have brought this fantastic weapon to life in the pages of this excellent book.
The sheer number of AK variants and spin off's will amaze you! "Secret guns", "special project Guns", the evolution of different styles, it's all in here in pictures and easy to understand text. This book has blueprints, specs and even a look at the weapons that will soon supersede the AK on the battlefield.
I you want to know everything about the evolution and the legend that is the AK-47, THIS book is where it's at!

Sheldon Charrett: title - The Modern Identity Changer
Ok, all together now... THIS BOOK IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY!!!! If you use some of the stuff in this book it's on your head, you can probably go to jail for trying some of this stuff. If it's entertainment in the area of Identity changing you seek, this book is for you!
Many "Identity changing books" use outdated methods that no longer work in today's computer driven society. They also don't seem to tell you the rest of the identity story... this book uses up to date information and exposes MANY secrets, pit falls, and faulty information that other books don't touch.
So you know how to get an Alternate ID? Great, do you know the other stuff that sends up red flags to companies when you present this ID? Mr. Charrett does! AND he tells you what those flags are and how to avoid them. He walks you through it, he adds the "trivia" to "flesh out" your alternate ID that many people forget.
Sheldon's obviously "been there, done that"... of course, who knows who he was when he did? This is an EXCELLENT ID resource! One that could be very valuable in light of all the Gov intrusions into our Constitutionally protected privacy rights.
Technical Specs:
Jerry Pickard: title - Scanner Modifications And Antennas
Well, I might be a bit biased here since I am an Electrical Engineer and this book hits my 2nd favorite past time dead center. But the book deserves high praises whether I am Biased or not.
Mr. Pickard has obviously spent a lot of time and research to pick up the best Scanner and antenna mods available. Now, You might say "Why Buy the book, I can find these mods on line free". I have a junk pile of burned up radios and scanners I'll sell you if you believe that to be the case. I have literally burned up scores of radios following "On line" advice. The Most recent was almost an expensive 10 meter Radio, something kept saying to me "This isn't right" so I stopped and drew out the circuit myself.. Bingo.. I had almost torched this baby.
You won't have that problem with Jerry's book, his designs and mods are based on sound, proven mods and practices on the more popular scanners of our time. He has good color photos, and walks you through each mod step by step. He gives you a list of tools needed and how to use them.
I personally enjoyed the section on antennas. Antennas are an often overlooked part of radios, which are probably more crucial than the radio itself! Jerry covers many antenna types, as well as "Stealth Antennas". His Stealth antenna may be worth the price of the book alone if you are ever in a situation where you NEED an antenna but fear discovery. This book is Solid, well written, entertaining and provides the novice hobbyist a chance to learn new skills and techniques. Beginner or Pro, it doesn't matter, you'll enjoy this book!
Technical Specs:
Bram Frank: title - The Leading Edge (A Complete Guide to Tactical Edged Weapon Use)
Let me say right up front... This is one of the best knife fighting videos I have ever been privileged to watch. Bram Frank shows you everything from beginner drills right up to more advanced techniques that will not only help keep you alive when things go south, but will help protect you in court during the aftermath.
Mr. Frank uses several drills and methods that I believe in 100%! I actually use "flow drills" and "biomechanical disabling" in my selfdefense/anti-rape classes, and I was surprised and excited to see them in this video. While our fighting and teaching styles may be different, his common sense and experience CAN NOT be dismissed by anyone!!
Very few people impress me, but Mr. Frank does. His fighting style does NOT stress complicated martial arts moves even though he obviously has the stance and training of a master martial artist. That "stance and training" is evident in his humor and his humility. Mr. Frank has something sadly lacking in many of today's self defense classes, Style!
I've watched "knife fighters" train, I've trained many myself, I've seen students stab another student with their rubber knife and say "you're dead, it's over". Thankfully Mr Frank explains and dispels these MYTHS! His form encourages "Bio-mechanical disabling" which in my opinion is the ONLY way to win a knife fight. A mortally wounded man can still have plenty left in him to be able to take you with him, and a tie in a knife fight is a bad outcome! However, an attacker with cut wrist tendons can't hold a knife.
Mr. Frank also stresses another important lesson, the aftermath of Court. As he eloquently points out, everyone has been cut, so a jury won't be too sympathetic to a dirtbag with a surgery scar on his wrists or shoulders, but a jury can't relate to death, cut throats, and disembowelment.
I applaud Mr. Frank for not going where so many other fighting styles go.. "death, gore and ruin". I can't say enough about this video... but if you want a common sense, no nonsense, REAL guide to winning a knife fight, THIS is the Video series for you!!!!!! I consider it a MUST HAVE!
Technical Specs:
George Hayduke : title - Up Yours
The author's name speaks for itself, HAYDUKE! Not to wear out an old cliché, but George Hayduke is THE MASTER of revenge techniques. His books are the standard that all other revenge type books are measured against. As usual Mr. Hayduke gleefully covers revenge tactics on everything from nasty ex-spouses, ex-lovers and ex-bosses, to landlords, corporations, Government red tape and everyone/everything else under the sun. George Hayduke is original, funny, and so clever that you can't help but love him (as long as you aren't on his bad side... you've never seen ME write up a bad review on his books or tapes have you? : )
This is one of his best! Packed with info! For INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY!
Technical Specs:
J. Raymond Albrektson: title - Living Large
Living Large shows you how to choose your standard of living, the basics of money management, giving strategies, saving and investment planning, simple budgeting, and last but not least, how to live joyfully on the rest!
*** J. Raymond Albrektson shows you how to truly injoy your money with biblical common sense on how to give, spend and save. A good read for those with large or small incomes with principles directly derived from scripture. ***
George Hayduke: title - The Revenge Series
Got someone you dislike, but can't confront them directly for whatever reason? Aw c'mon, we all have a mental "list" of people we "owe"... George Hayduke has made a living off telling you how to get even! You've seen him and his revenge books, "Get even", "Get even II", etc since you were young I bet.
I recently got the chance to review ALL of his books. So OK, I figured "Get Even" was great, but the rest would be rehashes of the tricks in his first book... NOT SO! He is undoubtedly one of the wicked and sneaky minded men on earth! I would NOT want to ever be on the wrong side of this man, so OF CORSE I am gonna give him rave reviews! :)
These books are very funny, packed full of info, and offer ideas to get your own creative juices flowing. He covers revenge for every subject you can think of, from Ex-spouses and lovers, to big corporation. It's all in there somewhere! Of COURSE these books are for entertainment purposes ONLY!!!! (Let's all say it together now: "If you get caught doing some of this stuff, you WILL go to jail!")
The Down Side:
Bob Smith: title - The Revenge Book
OK, Bob Smith aint George Hayduke (who is?), but his latest revenge book is hilarious and packed full of info just the same! Modern and up-to-date, his tactics are SURE to land you in jail if you get caught! So as usual, get this book for entertainment purposes only!
Jerry VanCook: title - Real World Self Defense: A Guide to Staying Alive in Dangerous Times
Interested in staying alive in dangerous times? Then this is the book to help you do it! Whether you're a beginner or advanced, this book has something for everyone. Many books "Claim" to be the ultimate defense book, but you don't see very many on here being reviewed. That's because most of them are overly complicated, lacking real world approaches or scenarios, or the info is just plain wrong... Not so with this book. Jerry covers each section and chapter in DETAIL, and then backs up that advise with more techniques throughout the book. He's obviously a believer in "stay aware and keep it simple"! (My kinda guy!)
This book has three big sections:
Bruce "Buckshot" Hemming: title - Buckshot's Modern Trapping Guide
This is one of the most complete trapping book ever written, without a doubt! Detailed photos take you step by step through successful trapping techniques. Learn the best sets for Beaver, muskrats, mink, otter, etc. Buckshot shows sure fire sets for Raccoons, fox, coyotes, bobcats, and many others!
Major John Plaster USAR (RET): title - The Ultimate Sniper
Major John Plaster is probably THE best sniper alive today, that's just a simple truth. In this MASSIVE book he covers every aspect, art and secret of being a better sniper. Clear out your reading schedule because this book is huge, and packed with the best fieldcraft and sniping info that can be had.
Kenn Abaygo: title - The International Fugitive
This book is a sequal to Kenn Abaygo's How to Run, Hide and Survive. As usual, Kenn gives you all the secrets of the world traveler from the perspective of someone who's "been there, done that". It's all covered here for the person who needs to hide, and needs to hide BAD!
Andy Stanford: title - Advanced Fighting With Firearms (In book or video!)
If you've been in the shooting community very long, you've doubtless heard the name "Andy Stanford". His newest Video or Book, Advanced Fighting With Firearms is a sequel to his first video by the same name. Watch this video and you'll get to see why his name is recognized whenever the subject of weapons arises.
Dr. Brett Jacques: title - Street Sambo : Practical Grappling Skills for Self-Defense (Available in video or in book!)
We've watched a LOT of instructional videos on various fighting techniques, but this is the one we've been waiting for. A common thread with many fighting videos is the unnatural stances and movements; they obviously take YEARS of training to achieve the precise, cat-like movements involved - that's great if you have years to train. For the rest of us, there's Street Sambo (Pronounced "Sah-m bow"). This is the original form from which are derived the hard hitting, no
BS, fight to win attitude of Army Rangers and Russian Special Forces.
Datu Kelly S. Worden: title - Tactical Baton (In video or in book!)
Tactical Baton is a two-video set with Datu Kelly S. Worden. Whether it's an asp baton, large stick or baseball bat, it's covered here. Datu Worden has obviously spent many years training in his craft. He has the stance and skill that all true martial artists carry.
The Real World of Alternate ID Acquisition
This is not so much a book as a 22-page pamphlet. D.P. Rochelle gives you his personal experiences and thoughts on obtaining alternate ID as he tries to obtain a birth certificate from a dead infant. It ends after he gets the certificate.
Techniques In Countersurveillance
Everyone knows our rights are shrinking everyday that goes by. Add to this the problem of nosey neighbors, landlords, or an over enthusiastic law enforcement agency and you have a bug problem. This book covers many of the basic aspects of these hidden bugs and cameras, and goes foward from there to indepth detail about these devices work and how to beat them.
This Book is set up as a basic manual for starting a debugging business.
Robert Merkle:title - The Ultimate Internet Outlaw
How surfers steal Sex, Software, CDs, Games and more stuff from the internet. This book goes from very simple explainations about he net, on to more complex items like finding "Pirate Sites", finding passwords, etc from web pages. It even covers how to lurk the net without anyone knowing where you travel... not even your service provider.
Sheldon Charrett:title - Electronic Circuits and Secrets Of an Old-Fashioned Spy
WOW. Let me say right up front that this book is "No-holds-barred". It's obviously written for people who already know electronics at least at a hobby level. I'm almost afraid to put this one online, so let me say that it IS ONLY for Academic Study! While not as detailed and comprehensive as some other books I have reviewed, what it does cover is "In your face", down and dirty, and from my experience as an Electrical Engineer, VERY workable. How to crack answering machines and make free calls are among the listed topics, Paladin makes it clear that this is for Academic Study only. Brother, if you are caught doing anything this book shows, you WILL go to jail!
Andy Stanford:title - Fight At Night
Some names stand out and speak for themselves, Gunsite, Gerber, Colt Andy Stanford, etc. Mr Stanford has done it again. Fight at Night is one of the best texts written on the subject of night fighting. It's very detailed and comprehensive. Not only are the topics of Firearms covered, but also how to use knives, flashlights, and your body as a weapon in the dark.
Tom Forbes: title - PVC Projects for the Outdoorsman
Ok, So you've seen PVC pipes used to make furniture, and you've probably heard of people using it to cache supplies in, but Tom Forbes uses it for A LOT more than that! This books walks you step by step through making many items, with excellent illustrations, non techincal language, and basic tools. Learn to make everything from Snowshoes, to target stands and rests, to boot dryers and snow sleds. Also covered are Teepees, portable ground blinds, latrines, showers, cots, cigarette Cases, packframes and much much more!
Shifty Bugman: title - The Basement Bugger's Bible
Many of you out there LOVE to tinker with electronics projects; I know I do. Many of us are also security minded, so if you like building TINY circuits and/or want to know who may be snooping in on your privacy, then "Shifty Bugman" custom-wrote this book for you!
My brother holds a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering so this is a subject that we scrutinize closely. We have seen these types of books come and go; most are trash for any one who needs SERIOUS information. My brother is a stickler for detail and reliability, so of course he tried to rip this book apart on technical details. After so many crappy books on the subject, you
don't know how happy it makes us to be able to say that this is one of the most complete works on the subject of tapping devices, bugs, eavesdropping, planting bugs, surveillance and counter-surveillance on the market today. I bet the hue and cry will shortly have this book on the "most wanted" list of both sides of the security/privacy issue. More importantly, BOTH sides of the debate are covered here, not only detailed instructions on how to build many listening devices, but
how to protect against them! Security, safety, covert ops - it's all in here!
Chapters include:
Ragnar Benson:title - Live Off The Land In City Or Country
This book was obviously written especially for survivalists and retreaters in the typical Ragnar Benson style. It offers very practical views on survival and living in the wild. Ragnar Benson makes a very important distinction between "Realist Survivalists" (like most of us) and "Purist survivalists" (who will mostly die off). Being a purist is fine for
camping and short weekends, but when TSHTF, you want EVERY advantage you can muster on your side... enter realism! This books gives the "how-to's" and lessons learned from old Indian secrets and even advice on survival medicine, caching, firearms, preserving food, diesel power generation and LOTS more. Interesting stories and ancedotes about the wildman of the clearwater, and the Nez Perce Indians story make this book entertaining as well as informative.
Technical Specs:
Hugh L. Coffee:title - Ditch Medicine: Advanced Field Procedures for Emergencies
It doesn't matter where you are, or what the situation is, if you, a team member, family member or friend is injured, you do what you have to do to save their life or treat the condition! Period! As survivalists we know that we may not always have access to a sanitary emergency room and a half-asleep doctor in the middle of the night. If that time comes, this is the book to have! This book teaches advanced field procedures for small wound repair, pain control, care of infected wounds, IV therapy, amputations, treatment of burns, airway procedures and much much more.
This book is writen in straightforward language for those who don't know an artery from a anuerism, and step-by-step proceedures are discussed in great detail. Pictures of suturing, debriding wounds and many other items show you what a thousand words cannot describe. So many techniques and how-to's are discussed that there is not room here to elaborate on all of them. Let's just say this book is pretty complete. Pair it with a few other reference manuals and you greatly increase your chances of saving a loved one's life in a disaster situation!
The Down Side:
None, well thought out with lots of diagrams and procedure pictures
Would WE Buy It?:
Oh Yes! Our Alpha team medic has already made this book part of his personal library and is recommending it to
others for their reference library. I consider this to be a companion to the US Army's Special Forces Medical handbook.

Bruce D. Clayton:title - Life After Doomsday (A Survivalist Guide to Nuclear War and Other Major Disasters)
This is THE best book on the subject of Nuclear war and other major disasters I have ever read. Dr. Clayton walks you through everything nuclear, from effects of air bursts, ground bursts, EMP, to every other nuclear topic imaginable. While famous for its nuclear information, this book is writen as a primer to surviving ANY disaster. Our Motto here at Alpha Group is(as you know) "It doesn't matter what causes the situation, you should be prepared to survive it". This book fits perfectly with that philosophy.
I consider this book one of the "MUST HAVE" books in any survival library. Not only does this book contain fantastic and interesting reading, but with its dozens of charts, lists, drawings and photos, this book serves as an excellent reference on surviving ANY major disaster. It is one of the few reference books I keep in my personal bookshelf beside the computer. When I read this book for the first time I was amazed by what I THOUGHT I knew. I was VERY wrong in many of my beliefs. Even the US government used Dr. Clayton's research to revise their policies in some areas.
Chapters covered include:
Carla Emory: The encyclopedia of country living
If I had to live away from society for any period of time this 845 page book would definitely go with me. Covers giving birth to burying the dead, growing corn to culling chickens, and everything else.
It is "A MUST" for people getting ready for the Y2K glitch. Be prepared. Have this in your library! You will be amazed at everything that is explained!

The Complete Book of Survival : How to Protect Yourself Against Revolution, Riots, Hurricanes, Famines and Other
Natural and Man-Made Disasters by Rainer Stahlberg
A prophetic book Had a chance to review the manuscript. After what has
happened to the stock market in October I followed the advice given under
Economic Survival. It has saved me from a meltdown of my lifesavings.
Today with the Asia problem spilling over I'm well-protected. Will keep
the book beside me as I watch the news to give me insight as to what is
forthcoming and how to react. A must have in your reference library.
How to Develop a Low-Cost Family Food-Storage System by Anita Evangelista
The Author says: It's wise to plan ahead. Thank you for taking the time to consider this book on food storage. This book is
designed to help you make the important food choices that will affect you and your family in the event of difficult
cirumstances. As I write this (Jan /97), a third of the nation is in severe blizzard, snow or ice conditions; another third is
recovering from flooding. Only the tip of Florida and Southern California have avoided some kind of catastrophic situation.
And, as usual, the evening news has found a way to interview folks who have had to drive through snow drifts or across
flooded riverbeds to get to the supermarket. It wouldn't take much in the way of food storage to prevent this kind of risky
situation....and even folks on the tightest budget with the smallest storage areas can "put aside" SOMETHING. Just a little
planning and some prudent action can help prevent putting yourself in danger's way, or can help keep you comfortable during
the inevitable downturns of life.
Where There Is No Doctor : A Village Health Care Handbook by David Werner, Carol Thuman, Jane Maxwel
A must for medical missionaries... Clear, concise, illustrated, and practical are but a few words that describe of this book. I
especially appreciated the "attitude" of the book... not only one of healing the sick, but also one of teaching those in the
village how to establish a medical community of their own. It's a great book to use and then leave for those with whom you've
been working. "Where There Is No Dentist" would be a good companion, as well.
Where There Is No Dentist by Murray Dickson
Companion to "where there is no Doctor". If you don't expect to have a dentist within walking distance, then you better have
this book!
Ragnar Benson:Title- The Survival Retreat
Need to know about retreats and survival living? Concerned about the decay of society and the safety of your family? This is one of the best books on the subject... Harden your existing home or build from scratch.
HERE!
Ragnar Benson:Title- The Modern Survival Retreat
Modern times are uncertain at best, but because you choose to live safer than most folks doesn't mean you should have to live in a cave. Survival retreats are NOT the damp, dark, ugly places once invisioned when the words "Survival Retreat" was spoken. Live in a modern, well stocked retreat.

Dennis Fiery: How to hide things in public places
With our government taking more and more power, and getting out of
our control, you may well need the information in this book! The
gun grabbers are after your guns, the government is after everything
else you "own".
